The Section for Visual Computing at DTU Compute carries out research in image analysis and computer graphics. The goal of image analysis is to extract information from images whereas the goal of computer graphics is concerned with image synthesis. Despite the fact that the goals are converse, there is a large overlap in methodology between the two fields.

The Image section at DTU Compute carries out research in image analysis and computer graphics. For image analysis, the goal is extract information from images whereas the goal of computer graphics is to create image content. Despite these opposite goals, there is a large overlap in the two fields because many of the methods are fundamentally the same.
The research is focused on six areas that include medical image analysis, appearance modelling, geometry modelling, computer vision, multivariate statistics for images, and [analysis of 3D microstructure](3d_microstructure.md). Much of our research is inspired by scientific problems from other research fields and collaboration with researchers from these fields, which inspires our research direction.
